New varieties have to pass a DUS test to be granted Plant Breeders Rights. A DUS test is normally conducted in one location in two successive years.

26 morphological characteristics are assessed under microscope in the lab and as visual assessments or manual measurements in the field trials. The aim of the DUS test is to test the distinctness of the candidate variety against reference varieties of common knowledge and to test if the candidate variety fulfills the uniformity and stability demands according to the technical protocol.
